“If you're done changing, you're done.” This is one of the mottos of Sofía, CEO at Bodega Lagarde. It illustrates the importance of going through a continuing learning process, "not necessarily evolving at all times but sometimes simply going back to basics and appreciating the essence of things."
We spoke with Sofía about her sources of inspiration, her vision about the winery and, of course, her favorite wines!
- What inspires you? (art, books, music, etc.)
I like reading novels such as those by Ayn Rand and J.D. Salinger, but I also enjoy decoration books. I really enjoy music, except for cumbia. My taste is eclectic, ranging from Ricardo Vilca, Soda Stereo and Coldplay to Carlos Vives, Fonseca, Susana Baca and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, among many others. I'm inspired by fabrics and everything that is handmade, by noble materials, by nature... by simple, happy people, my husband and my children, people working towards society's common good
- Where do you see Lagarde 10 years from now?
I see it consolidating its brands worldwide, improving the wines we make and releasing ones. Our goal is to have one of the best restaurants in Mendoza. We also intend to help everyone working in our winery achieve their life goals, their families' and children's growth. We see ourselves offering job opportunities that will contribute to people's development.
- What's the key to good wine production?
You need to have good land and good soil: an exceptional terroir. One that you know in depth so that you may get the best out of it. Because every terroir requires different management, irrigation and planting approaches. It's something similar to the warp in a loom: it may take some time until you get to know it and learn how to make something beautiful out of it.
- What are your favorite meals or recipes to pair with olive oil?
Bread. I use olive oil in everything. Boiled potatoes with olive oil and sea salt are simply amazing. I also like pears with sea salt and olive oil.
- Tell us about your favorite space at the winery.
I love spending time in the orchard, by the mud oven, by the vineyard, with a glass of wine in my hand as I watch the sunset. I also like going for early morning walks around the vineyard.
- How do you drink your favorite wines?
I drink Primeras Viñas Malbec when friends come over for an asado or some beef. I love Chardonnay Guarda, and I usually pair it with a small selection of cheeses when I get home from work. I enjoy Quieto Cabernet Franc, Garnacha Blanco by Mayol Family, and Mendel's Semillón, just as I also love Lagarde's own Semillón. Wines are truly my pleasure: there are just so many that are so good!
