The 2020 vintage was different and unforgettable
The 2020 vintage has concluded and will be unforgettable for those involved for several reasons, amongst which are the precautions and restrictions that we had to implement with our work teams in view of the spread of Covid-19 in Argentina and the world. Furthermore, it was a different kind of harvest, due to the high temperatures registered during the summer and the low yields of the vineyards.
However, the health of the grapes was excellent and the quality of the wines that we are starting to produce promises to be outstanding. We expect the vintage 2020 wines to be concentrated and with very intense colors and aromas.
“It was a rare harvest, thanks to certain peculiarities, such as the fact that we were forced to start earlier than expected because of the intense heat. This summer was very hot in some parts of Mendoza, forcing us to go out and collect the white grapes earlier than we had hoped”, explained Juan Roby, head winemaker of Lagarde.
“We also noticed a lower production, making this a peculiar harvest. However, I hope that later on, some wines will benefit from these conditions, especially on a quality level", added Roby.
Undoubtedly, this harvest would not have been possible without the heroes of the 2020 Vintage: the harvesters, the agricultural engineers and winemakers who left their homes day after day to collect the fruits of a whole year of work. We are very thankful to you all!
The harvest estate by estate
Drummond (Luján de Cuyo):
It was a short harvest, marked by a strong advance in maturity due to high temperatures. Combined by the fact that there was low water supply, the vines showed loose bunches with small berries, which resulted in an excellent concentration of polyphenols, low yields and excellent health.
Perdriel (Luján de Cuyo):
Atypical year for the start of the harvest, since we started much earlier: in January. Low yields due to the incidence of late frosts, during the spring. We went to great lengths to harvest everything at its optimum point of polyphenolic maturity. Reds with very good concentration and very expressive whites.
Agrelo (Luján de Cuyo):
One of the most complex areas this season, due to the high concentration of sugar with a maturity of polyphenols that was difficult to reach. This required an emphasis on irrigation, to avoid high alcohol. We made it through the harvest with optimal health of the grains and in a short period.
Gualtallary (Tupungato, Valle de Uco):
This particular area of the Uco Valley was quite punished by nature, since we had incidence of frost, zonda wind and hail. The latter severely punished some areas of our estate. However, in the areas with anti-hail cloth, we obtained grapes of excellent quality and here, as in the rest of our vineyards, we harvested earlier than expected. It was a very short harvest; it lasted one week. We obtained clusters with thick skined berries, which resulted in a high polyphenolic concentration and high acidity, which is ideal for creating wines with great storage potential.
