Lagarde: decades perfecting Cabernet Sauvignon
This Friday, August the 30th, the world will celebrate International Cabernet Sauvignon Day and at Bodega Lagarde we are taking this opportunity to remember our long tradition as producers of this popular variety, considered to be the queen of reds.
Lagarde, founded in Mendoza, in 1897, always stood out as a producer of Cabernet Sauvignon, but the oldest bottles of this varietal found in our cellar date to 1974. That wine was made with grapes from vineyards located in Luján de Cuyo, the area in which the winery was built over a century ago.
Lagarde´s Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards are located in the main wine-growing regions of Mendoza and are harvested manually. The wines we produce using this grape reflect the complexity and richnes of the terroirs of Mayor Drummod and Perdriel (Luján de Cuyo), Vista Flores (Tunuyán) and Gualtallary (Tupungato).
Throughout our 122 years of history, our winemakers have created iconic Cabernet, including vintages such as Henry Gran Guarda No. 1 Cabernet Sauvignon 1990, Henry Gran Guarda Cabernet Sauvignon No. 1 2003 and Primeras Viñas Cabernet Sauvignon 2012. All three are high end, 100% varietal wines.
The most celebrated of our creations made with this variety is probably Lagarde Cabernet Sauvignon 1980, which won Gold Medals both at the International Wine Tasting Contest of Vinexpo France 1991 and at the Latin American Wines Contest held at the World Cup of Wines in Brussels, in 1992.
More recently, Primeras Viñas Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 achieved 91+ in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate; 91 points from James Suckling; 90 points from British master of wines Tim Atkin and 94 in Descorchados Guide, edited by Patricio Tapia.
Currently, the winery's portfolio has three very different Cabernet, with strong personalities and good body. They are: Altas Cumbres Cabernet Sauvignon 2018; Lagarde Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 and Primeras Viñas Cabernet Sauvignon 2014.
