Harvest 2019: One of the bests of the decade and with great aromatic qualities

The 2019 vintage came to an end and provided grapes with great quality thanks to the weather being dry and fresh during most of the season. Also, because it rained less than in previous years. It is considered by many in the industry to be among the best harvest seasons of the last decade and an especially good one for the production of high end wines and those destined for long term storage.

Juan Roby, Lagarde´s winemaker, explained: "We obtained wines with moderate alcohol and high natural acidity, hence we expect the white wines to be delicate, aromatic and fresh and the reds to have very good tannic structure and high intensity of color and aromas".

Roby, who oversees the winery's vineyards, added that "the yields were normal, with berries of small size in general, but with very good concentration".

As for Malbec, Argentina´s emblematic strain, Roby indicated that the common elements are "well defined aromas and a lot of freshness".

Harvest by the Region

Drummond (Luján de Cuyo) The yield was lower than usual as a result of a shortage of water during the irrigation season, resulting in smaller clusters and berries that will lead to wines with a higher concentration.

Perdriel (Luján de Cuyo) Some cold days during the spring made us think that we could experience some damage due to frost, but in the end the yields were not affected. The quality of the grapes was excellent for both whites and reds.

Agrelo (Luján de Cuyo) The yield here was good and within the usual numbers. The outstanding climatic conditions allowed us to wait until the grapes were at their moment of optimum maturity in order to collect them.

Gualtallary (Tupungato, Valle de Uco) Heat waves during the summer made us think that we were going to have to harvest much earlier than expected, but eventually we only had to in certain areas. With the grapes from these vineyards we are producing wines with very good acidity, aromatic concentration and color.

Beyond the Lagarde vineyards, the industry is in agreement that we went through one of the best harvest seasons of the last decade, with good yields and an excellent maturity for the grapes, highlighting the qualities of the fruit and foreshadowing wines that will have a great storage potential.
